about

Dakota Mill keeps the summer vibes flowing with the release of their latest single “Rocky Shores”. The song is the second song of a series of singles to be released from their upcoming full-length record “Earthlicker”. “Rocky Shores” is a song that has had many different incarnations over the years. The original version was written in 2016 though it remained unreleased until it was rewritten and reworked to find it’s final version in 2020. As a song “Rocky Shores” experienced its largest creative shift when songwriter Bradon Dougherty brought it to musical collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Joey den Butter. As soon as scratch tracks were recorded, den Butter had the idea of incorporating an electronic drum machine in order to emphasize the driving feel of the song. The use of electronic drums is a completely new addition to Dakota Mill’s sonic palette and is a great example of their ability to produce beyond their comfort zone. The pushing and pulling of synthesizers paired with the driving drum machine really bring home a nostalgic 80s feel while the use of picked lead guitar melodies and indie-rock guitar tones provide the ability to maintain a contemporary sound. The majority of the production and recording of “Rocky Shores” was completed in Dougherty and den Butter’s home studio in Hamilton. The final mixing was done at David Partridge's Helm Recording Studios in Haliburton, Ontario and was mastered by Joao Carvahlo at Joao Carvalho Mastering in Toronto.

lyrics

I have thoughts when I’m alone like I’m alone when I have thoughts like

I hate staring out of windows
But I love watching it rain
And how I got nowhere to go
But I hate staying in place

I’ve watched my father work so hard
To make my dreams come true
Oh father I hope in time
I can achieve one for you

Could this just be my life passing me by
Am I taking my time or is time taking my life
Or could this just be my mind playing tricks on my eyes
Am I taking my time or is time taking my life

I have thoughts when I’m alone like I’m alone when I have thoughts like

Guess I’ll run back to the forest
The only place I find peace
It’s where I wrote this old chorus
And all the words that I speak when I say

Life comes so easy for those who can wait
Though I’ve never been the most patient with things I know I can change

I have thoughts when I’m alone like I’m alone when I have thoughts like

Could this just be my life passing me by
Am I taking my time or is time taking my life
Or could this just be my mind playing tricks on my eyes
Am I taking my time or is time taking my life

Don’t take my life (x2)
